Watch: Disaster Never Looked so Good as in ‘The Tower’ Teaser Trailer + Poster

"Survive at any cost." Some over-the-top fun from South Korea to end the year of Indie Trailer Sundays. This is a film called The Tower, a South Korean thriller directed by Kim Ji-hoon (of the films Mokpo the Harbor, May 18, Sector 7), another new high-rise fire disaster thriller in the vein of Towering Inferno, or as AICN points out, Clark Gable's San Francisco. But this looks extremely action packed with firemen action scenes, exploding sky bridges, tons of destructive photography of two very tall buildings on fire. It's actually kind of tragic to watch, but I suppose it passes for cinematic entertainment in the end, right? Take a look!

A Christmas Eve party at a luxury residential high-rise building takes a horrific turn when a fire breaks out. Korean director Kim Ji-hoon (who previously helmed Sector 7 and May 18) was inspired by the 1974 Hollywood film The Towering Inferno, and his personal experience seeing the 63 Building in Seoul for the first time as a middle school student and imagining how it would feel to be trapped inside. The film stars Sol Kyung-gu, Kim Sang-kyung and Son Ye-jin. This was made on a budget of 10 million won. It was just released on Christmas Day in Korea, earning the second biggest opening day record in Korean history.

CJ Entertainment is releasing Kim Ji-hoon's The Tower in theaters and currently has a limited release date set for January 11th, 2013 in a few weeks. Stay tuned. Visit the website thetowermovie2013.com.

Review: 'Jack Reacher' is Great Crime Thriller! Pleasantly Surprised

PLOT: When a former army sniper is accused of mass murder, he requests that his lawyer (Rosamund Pike) find a former MP named Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise). Reacher, who’s been living off the grid, without a permanent home or even a driver’s license for the last couple of years, promptly shows up and opens his own investigation. He eventually discovers the truth behind the brutal mass murder, leading him to a nefarious underworld figure called “The Zec” (Werner Herzog).

REVIEW: So here comes Jack Reacher, based on the Lee Child novel One Shot, the first film based on Child's series of Jack Reacher books that are probably actually more popular than Cruise is. The book's fans were apoplectic when the compact Cruise was cast as the large and intimidating Reacher, but the film fits well around him, with Cruise stepping up serviceably to play the ex-military cop who arrives in Pittsburgh to help solve what looks like a random sniper attack that killed five. Reacher doesn't have a passport, doesn't fly, buys his clothes at Goodwill and is exceedingly paranoid; Cruise seems much more confident playing this skilled oddball than he ever has playing an everyman.

Jack Reacher allows Cruise to go through all the stations of the star vehicle, with a little bit of hand-to-hand combat, a little bit of flirtation with a local lady lawyer (Rosamund Pike), a little bit of macho rivalry with the strait-laced homicide detective (David Oyelowo), a car chase, a murder mystery, and of course a shootout. Reacher's a little less funny that he is in the books, but Cruise's coming timing is spot-on when it's called for, including a slapsticky attack scene and the late-in-the-film verbal sparring with Robert Duvall, playing a rifle range owner with the key to cracking the whole case.

Looming literally in the shadows, with just two scenes in the whole film, is documentarian Werner Herzog as the villain Zec, a survivor of a Siberian gulag who chewed off his own fingers when they were dying of frostbite. Zec is exactly the bad guy you want Herzog to play, with delicious lines ("Did I have a knife in Siberia?") and enough menace in his one functioning to chill your blood. It's criminal that Zec is such a small part of the film, but that might be the price paid by a star vehicle-- if Herzog were around too much more, Cruise would definitely no longer be the main attraction. 

Director Christopher McQuarrie, the screenwriter of The Usual Suspects and the underrated Valkyrie, sets up the case in a masterful, silent opening scene, and does well by the car chase and fight scenes, operating with a no-frills efficiency that suits the title character. Where he gets off track is with occasional flourishes, from clunky lines of dialogue ("It was such a great crime scene, no one stopped to think it might be too great") to a florid flashback showing us all the five sniper victims while they lived, milking sympathies we already felt. The conspiracy theory behind the sniper attack is more elaborate and satisfying to unravel in the One Shot book, but McQuarrie keeps a remarkable amount of the plot intact, allowing movie audiences to marvel at Reacher's skills as much as the book's many fans have for years.

There are plenty more Jack Reacher books to choose from should this turn into the much-desired franchise, and some of them are more loose and imaginative than this story, which might make a sequel a little more welcome. Jack Reacher errs on the side of taking itself too seriously, and in simplifying the story becomes more of a standard-issue action thriller-- while most of us know that Reacher, and Cruise himself, are capable of something more. Maybe next time.

Exclusive: Two TV spots for 'A Good Day to Die Hard'!

Now that the New Year is just a few more days away, you can bet all the greeting card and holiday goodie companies are already getting ready for Valentine's Day. The good news is that even if you don't have a significant other to indulge in the romantic holiday with, you can still enjoy February 14th at the movies with A Good Day to Die Hard. It's the fifth round for Bruce Willis as John McClane, and this time his son Jack (Jai Courtney) has gotten in a little bit of trouble in Russia. Now the first two TV spots have shown up, and while they mostly contain footage from previous trailers, there's some cool new action shots.

Here's the first two TV spots for John Moore's A Good Day to Die Hard, straight from Fox:

A Good Day to Die Hard is the fifth installment in the long running Die Hard franchise following Bruce Willis as Detective John McClane. John Moore (Max Payne, Behind Enemy Lines) directs the sequel written by Skip Woods (The A-Team, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). This time McClane finds himself in Russia where nothing is as it seems and he must team up with his estranged son (Jai Courtney) in order to stay alive in Moscow and keep the world safe for democracy. Holiday Card from Robert Downey Jr. and New quotes on 'Iron Man 3'

If you're like us, you celebrated the holidays by rewatching Shane Black's terrific detective story Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which - like many of Black's films - is set at Christmastime. It's also a great primer for the dynamic we can expect between Black and his lead actor Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming Iron Man 3, which recently made our list of 20 Films We'd Be Sad To Miss If the World Ends. We've seen some excellent trailers so far, and Downey recently spoke with the mag Nuts UK (NSFW link, via Comic Book Movie) and offered up a few more tidbits about what Marvel has in store to kick off its cinematic Phase Two.

Here's what Downey told Nuts UK when asked how this film compares with Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2:

"I think Shane’s gone for a dark feel in this movie. It’s a lot grittier and goes back to its comic-book roots. It’s shaped into a really special movie - and Shane as been instrument [sic] in that."

I think part of the reason Iron Man 2 wasn't nearly as good as the original was because they attempted to go the route of the typical action movie sequel and tried to make things darker, touching on the famous "Demon in a Bottle" storyline that involved Stark's alcoholism. Granted, that movie had tons of other, larger problems, but I'm not so sure that making things "a lot grittier" is the answer here. The Avengers and the first Iron Man worked so well because they were relatively light and quippy, not bogged down by brooding characters. But for those who think that the tone might be headed in an overly dark direction, don't fret. Kevin Feige has already said it's not just a "serious movie," and with Shane Black at the helm, there will certainly be some humor on display.

Downey also spoke a bit about his co-star Ben Kingsley, who is playing The Mandarin, the leader of the terrorist group The Ten Rings:

"I always think there's something more terrifying about a villain who's a genius, as opposed to just relying on strength or ability. We all know what a fantastic actor Ben Kingsley is, and he pulls off the evil genius with real terrifying results."

Exclusive: 'Star Trek into Darkness' Brand new Set of Images + Abrams Explanation.

"You think your world is safe - it is an illusion." There's no question that thanks to the early teaser trailers and hype they have been building, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness is one of our most anticipated movies of 2013.

Some of these quotes come from the The Playlist, where they've teased some of the photos and quotes online (but not everything yet), as well as from TrekMovie where they've been keeping track of everything stated so far. Everything mentioned is fairly vague and won't reveal anything we haven't already surmised or seen in the trailer, but they're interesting quotes to read (and photos) nonetheless. Up first, J.J. talks about how exactly the Into Darkness title connects to the story, and it all sounds damn good:

"I love movies that are big and unabashedly a huge fan of big pop mass appeal movies. I do love that. I love being in a theater packed with people and everyone gasping at the same time and having that communal experience. I don’t like going to the movies to feel bad. I don’t like going to the movies to feel depressed and feel diminished. The reason you go to the movies is to feel bigger and stronger and happier. So this is a movie that they certainly go 'Into Darkness,' but I would be the wrong director if it was about characters staying there. This is very much a movie about hope, about love, about romance, and about facing something that is truly terrifying and finding a way through the connection of your family and surviving and being stronger afterwards."

"So this movie doesn’t require you have seen the first movie. The characters are a group of people who have recently come together and find themselves up against this incredibly terrifying force. His name is John Harrison and he is sort of an average – that is what makes him so scary – he is just an average guy who works in an organization called Starfleet, and he turns against the group because he has got this back-story and this kind of amazing secret agenda. After two very violent attacks, one in London and one in the US, our characters have to go after this guy and apprehend him. And it is a far more complicated and difficult thing then they ever anticipated. "Into Darkness" is very much about how intense it gets and really what they are up against."

Which is kind of what Cumberbatch gets at when he responds to a question about his character. Here he drops a great quote:

"When J.J. described the role to me... he described someone who was, in movie terms, a mixture of Hannibal Lecter, Jack in 'The Shining,' and the Joker in 'Batman'... He's someone who has enormous physical strength. He's someone who is incredibly dangerous, both as a physical entity and through the use of various technologies and weapons and who performs acts of what I would describe as terrorism. He's also a psychological master. He manipulates the minds of those around him to do his bidding in a very, very subtle way."

Now that is the kind of villain I'm excited to see fully realized in a big, bold Star Trek "space opera" sci-fi movie. That combination of Hannibal and Joker and Jack sounds deviously delectable and if they can pull off that kind of iconic character, without making it seem like another take on one of those, this may just top J.J.'s first movie and even some of the original Star Trek movies.Stay tuned for more.

'After Earth' Poster Reveals A Crashed Ship On A Dangerous Planet

1000 Years Ago, We Left For a Reason. See the movie to find out what exactly that reason was. Columbia Pictures has revealed this new poster for M. Night Shyamalan's summer sci-fi After Earth, starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. We've already seen one impressive full-length trailer so far and it's much more about Jaden's solo journey, which is why this poster shows just Jaden (playing "Kitai Raige") standing atop the crashed spaceship he lands in on a future Earth. It's a cool sci-fi poster, and I like the look of it with the crashed ship partially in frame, but it's not as good as the unofficial poster art from Hopko. See below!

First Photo: Sharlto Copley Looks Better Villain in Neill Blomkamp's 'Elysium'

What a badass. Hell yes! I was just talking with a friend last night about Sharlto Copley in this movie, how badass he looks, how he'll steal the show (or at least put up a damn good fight). Those of us at Comic-Con got a taste of this character, but now Empire has revealed an official first look photo of actor Sharlto Copley (who played the lead in District 9) in Neill Blomkamp's new sci-fi Elysium, which was pushed to an August release next year. This time he plays the villain of the movie, an assassin named Kruger who carries around a sword and dresses like a homeless nomad. I'm sure we'll see more soon, but for now this is just a first look.

Elysium, directed by South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (of District 9), focuses on Secretary Rhodes (Foster), a hardened government official, who will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. However, that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds. Sony/Columbia has Elysium scheduled to land in theaters August 9th, 2013 (India 16 August 2013) next year.

First Trailer for 'Pain & Gain' Starring Mark Wahlberg And Dwayne Johnson is Here!

After a couple cool posters with the muscles of Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, the first trailer for Michael Bay's lower budget action thriller Pain & Gain has arrived. It definitely looks just like one of Bay's films with the sweeping camera shots and hot color palettes, but there's significantly less explosions. There's still plenty of super models, and a tone that feels like dimwitted, muscular Bad Boys doing a heist, so it's not something completely different for Bay, but it doesn't look half bad. Wahlberg and Johnson seem to make a great team, and Anthony Mackie is thrown in the mix too with Ed Harris in pursuit. Watch!

Character Posters and new Trailer for 'Great Gatsby' Starring DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire

"Gatsby. He had an extraordinary sense of hope." One fantastic trailer arrived earlier this year when The Great Gatsby was scheduled to debut at the end of this year. However, Warner Bros. already had Oscar contenders in the form of Argo, Cloud Atlas and The Dark Knight Rises (they hope, anyway), so they delayed the film to summer 2013. So now the hype machine is restarting for Baz Luhrmann's new take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and more sharing the spotlight again in a new trailer. I can't wait to see this film. Vin Diesel's 'Riddick' now set for release in September of 2013

It's official! Riddick is coming to theaters in 2013 to top off a sci-fi packed year. Vin Diesel himself took to Facebook to make the announcement, posting a picture of himself in the classic Riddick gear (with goggles) with director David Twohy. He also included the message: "September 6th 2013 - the release date of next year's RIDDICK. IMAX... very cool, great job DT." He's referring to David Twohy helping it be an IMAX-released movie, which sounds like will be the case. So expect a new (Chronicles of) Riddick movie starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Dave Bautista, Jordi Mollà and Katee Sackhoff out in September next year. Comic-Con appearance? Definitely. Now we have to wait for a trailer, hopefully we'll see one soon.

Jamie Foxx: Electro Costume won’t be green and yellow in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Sequel

This Christmas, Jamie Foxx will light up screens as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's epic western Django Unchained, but soon he'll be stepping into entirely new territory: a superhero movie. Foxx will play Electro for director Marc Webb in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, joining the impressive returning cast of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and newcomers like Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn and Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson. Foxx has spoken about his upcoming villainous role a bit already, but in a recent interview Foxx talked about the costume he'll be wearing. Comic purists, prepare to be disappointed.

Here's what Foxx told Blackfilm (via ComingSoon) when asked about the classic green and yellow suit:

"It won’t be green and yellow. It will be a different color. They (the producers) want something for the future. They want to have it more grounded and not as comic bookie, so it won’t be green and yellow. They want to try new things, like a liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happen. How did he become this way? So, it will be some new stuff."

I remember the fan outcry when Bryan Singer's X-Men came out and the costumes in the movie didn't look like the ones from the comic book, but I'd like to think that fans have moved on past this kind of outrage by now and realized that what works on the page doesn't always work on the screen. There will always be a subset of diehard fans who are disappointed that filmmakers take liberties with characters they love, but even Watchmen, which arguably stuck to its comic source material closer than any other comic book film, still switched the costumes up slightly. And honestly, because Electro's suit was goofy-looking, we chose the above version of the villain to pair with Jamie Foxx instead. I won't say I'm thrilled to see a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, but with a strong talent like Foxx on board, hopefully we can get a villain that's a bit more fleshed out than Rhys Ifans' ridiculous Lizard incarnation was last time. Thoughts?

If you haven't been getting enough flames and sparks in your movie posters lately, the father and son duo of John and Jack McClane has arrived with Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney armed and smirking, presumably at off-screen bad guys, on the new poster for A Good Day to Die Hard. It's nothing special, and that red text with all that orange background is kind of hideous, but whatever. It's clear this poster is just a mere reminder that this movie exists and isn't needed to sell the movie hard. The title with Bruce Willis' face does that on its own. Also, if you look closely, the sequel is getting an IMAX release. Look!

Review: "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is Perfect That's all.

PLOT: After an unexpected visit from a wizard, a simple hobbit is convinced to go on an adventure far from home. Off to what is called the Lonely Mountain, he joins forces with a band of dwarves looking to reclaim their treasure and home from the monstrous dragon Smaug.

REVIEW: There are very few motion pictures that affected me quite like THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy had. Epic and emotional, I grew more and more ecstatic about experiencing each upcoming installment. Yet for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, some of the excitement lessened as its release grew closer. Whether it was the news that there would be three films made from one book to the seemingly mixed reaction to it being shown in 48 frames per second, I found myself more than a little worried. How would Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth possibly live up to the earlier films? Well, perhaps it wasn’t meant to be as grand a tale.

With all my preconceived notions of what The Hobbit would be, there was still the fact that I really enjoy cinematically visiting Jackson’s recreation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. There was a sense of comfort returning to the places where the director took us in LOTR. It was also refreshing to once again hear Howard Shore's remarkable score present itself in a familiar yet fresh way. This is a world that was created with such care and detail that as a fan, it was like visiting an old friend. Especially with so many of the original cast members including Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett as the Elrond and Galadriel among others. The most satisfying returning cast member however is Andy Serkis as Smeagol (and his darker side Gollum). As great as he was technically in LOTR, he is absolutely flawless here. From the visual effects to Serkis exceptional performance, his short on-screen time very well may be the best part of the film. The exchange between Gollum and Freeman is absolutely perfect.

As much as I enjoyed this more personal journey, sometimes the deliberate pacing feels a bit strained. Considering this is the first film, you have to wonder how Mr. Jackson and company will fill the next two features. And while LOTR told an epic battle of good and evil, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's more personal approach occasionally wears thin. In many ways this first chapter feels like the home video “Extended Edition” as opposed to the “Theatrical Edition.” Many of the hard core fans will have no problem with this, yet those that are not quite converted to that level of commitment may feel the near three hours pass heavily upon them.

In the end – or shall I say the beginning - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a visual feast with whimsy and charm. The performances from Freeman, McKellen, Serkis and Armitage are fantastic.

Jackman's 'The Wolverine' Unveils a Stormy International Motion Poster

Introducing Hugh Jackman as Logan in the stand-alone The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold. 20th Century Fox has been releasing some fairly impressive bits of early marketing so far for The Wolverine, the spin-off Wolvie solo movie set in Japan based on the Frank Miller & Chris Claremont storyline. We've seen a badass first look and bone claws photo showing Jackman, plus the sleek teaser poster art and on set Q&A, now we've got a "motion poster" to unveil the international teaser poster - which is also quite badass. The artwork shows Logan crouched, clutching samurai sword in one hand, claws in the other, with a glimpse at the Tokyo Tower in the background. Love it. It's impressive artwork and such a dark but stunning tease.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc by Chris Claremont & Frank Miller, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day) is directing The Wolverine from a script by Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback who are adapting the classic 1982 story arc in the Wolverine comics, which takes our favorite mutant all the way to Japan. The cast includes Will Yun Lee as the Silver Samurai, Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper, Brian Tee, Hiroyuki Sanada and Rila Fukushima. 20th Century Fox is releasing The Wolverine in theaters starting July 26th, 2013.

Good Bye 2012: The 2012 Movie Trailer Mash-Up 2! (By Genrocks)

Yesterday a brand new name delivered quite the impressive year-end retrospective video in the form of Cinemageddon 2012, and now one of our editing veterans has returned with their take on the films of this year in Filmography 2012. Genrocks has been one of our stand-bys for a good annual wrap up with videos for 2010 and 2011. Right from the beginning, the video is epic featuring some of the big trailer lines from 2012 from The Avengers, Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises and slows it down for films like Cloud Atlas, Beasts of the Southern Wild and more. It's another stunning tribute to this great year in film.

Exclusive: 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Trailer Coming Again With a Bang!

There was already a lot of promotion for G.I. Joe: Retaliation earlier this year, but that was before the film was delayed for a 3D conversion (and maybe some new scenes and more Channing Tatum) and slated for release in late March next year instead. Now some time has passed and it's time to get the hype machine rolling again. There's plenty of new lines from Bruce Willis, a new scene with Tatum too and word from Ain't It Cool's BNAT 14 said the ninja sequence in the mountains was incredible and the 3D conversion looked really good. Hopefully this delay was worth it and we'll have fun with the Joes in March.

G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation is being directed by Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2 & 3D, "The LXD", Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) from a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick. Channing Tatum returns as Duke, along with Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Lee Byung-hun as Storm Shadow. Other newcomers to the cast include Bruce Willis as General Joseph B. Colton, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, Ray Stevenson as Firefly, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse, Arnold Vosloo as Zartan, D.J. Cotrona as Flint, and RZA as the Blind Master. Paramount is planning to release G.I. Joe: Retaliation starting on March 29th, 2013.

Exclusive: First Epic 'Pacific Rim' Trailer!

After footage debuted at Comic-Con this past summer, we've been waiting for general audiences to catch some sort of glimpse of Guillermo del Toro's action-packed sci-fi Pacific Rim. The new viral campaign gave us a tease of the monsters and the robots who will do battle next summer, but now the first trailer for the epic film has arrived, and it looks like the epitome of a blockbuster sci-fi 3D movie. The story follows a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi), who are teamed to operate of a massive robot designed to fight creatures known as Kaiju. This is going to be nuts! Watch now!

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) is directing Pacific Rim from a script by Travis Beacham. The film follows a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi), who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger, a massive robot designed to fight legions of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju, which started rising from the sea years ago. They stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. The film also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Clifton Collins Jr. Warner Bros will release Pac Rim in theaters in 3D starting July 12th, 2013. Excited?

2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) Nominees Announced

The nominees for the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have just been announced today. Yet another awards show in the very top tier (which also includes the Golden Globes and Academy Awards) is the Screen Actors Guilds Awards, where the actors themselves choose the best performances from amongst their peers. These noms are usually similar to those at the Oscars.
